The Book of Exodus begins with an extraordinary statement: “A new king was appointed over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.” In the Talmud, the sages Rav and Shmuel debate whether or not a new king was appointed, or whether it was the same pharaoh, but he had deliberately chosen to forget Joseph.
