Buried inside a pasuk in Mishpatim is a phrase that the Talmud teaches us allows humans to practice medicine, and not just to rely on God’s help. Rabbi Dunner cites his grandfather’s sefer, Mikdash Halevi, which highlights a difference between this phrase referencing human medicine and the one used earlier about God’s curative powers.

Using a poignant story about his son (and Rabbi Dunner’s uncle) Dayan Ahron Dovid Dunner, who almost died from pneumonia at the age of 3-months, the Mikdash Halevi offers a refreshing interpretation of this apparent contradiction.
