THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MOSES MAIMONIDES

January 8th, 2018

Physician, Philosopher & Codifier of Jewish Law

Moses Maimonides, aka Rabbeinu Moshe ben Maimon, aka Musa ibn Maymun, aka Rambam — is one of Jewish history’s most important and influential figures.

A fugitive from Islamic oppression in Spain and Morocco, he became a powerful Jewish leader in Egypt, and personal physician to the Egyptian ruler. He was intimately familiar with the abstract world of philosophy and theology; at the same time he was determined to organize and codify the complex and confused body of Jewish law so that it could have practical application for the Judaism of his day.

Who was Maimonides, and how did he come to be such an important Jewish voice? Who were his influences, and how can his own influence on Judaism best be defined more than 800 years after his passing?

Rabbi Dunner examines the key aspects of the life and works of Maimonides, and offers insights into the legacy of this giant of Jewish history.
