THE DAUGHTERS OF TZELOFCHAD

July 4th, 2018

One of the most curious episodes in the Torah is the appearance of the daughters of Tzelofchad in front of Moses to complain about their exclusion from inheriting a portion in the Promised Land, as a result of their father’s death (Num. 27).

Rabbi Dunner goes through the passage, highlighting the key points, and then surveys a range of commentaries and insights from the Talmud through to modern commentaries, revealing a remarkable subtext to this important story.

As it turns out, both Tzelofchad and his five daughters were extraordinary people, whose efforts on behalf of their nation extended well beyond their own personal needs.
