Following their miraculous delivery from certain death via the miracle of the splitting of the Red Sea, the Jewish People, led by Moses, burst forth into song, expressing their faith and gratitude to God. The opening lyric of “Az Yashir” in Parshat Beshalach describes how Egypt’s riders and horses were engulfed by the waters of the sea. Seemingly this is a minor aspect of the extraordinary supernatural events that had occurred. Why mention it at all? Rabbi Dunner cites his grandfather’s commentary, Mikdash HaLevi, which offers a number of important lessons that underpin this historical song of faith.
