WHAT WAS THE SIN OF THE GOLDEN CALF?

February 24th, 2016

In Parshat Ki Tissa we are introduced to the perplexing story of the Golden Calf, surely one of the most confounding episodes in the whole Torah.

What exactly were they thinking when they demanded that Aaron create an ‘Elohim’ for them in Moshe’s absence? Why would Aaron have so willingly allowed himself to become a part of this strange saga? Is it possible that Aaron was willing to create a pagan god? Whatever his role, how was he able to be the high priest after being involved in this dreadful mistake?

There is clearly so much more to this story than meets the eye, and it is important to seek out the details before jumping to any conclusions.

Rabbi Dunner looks at a number of different approaches to get behind the scenes and get to grips with this troubling story.
