IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE PROPERLY

January 9th, 2019

The Midrash is adamant that the final act of the Exodus from Egypt was executed by God Himself, not by an angel or some other messenger. But the text of the narrative in Parshat Bo is ambiguous, with oblique references to destructive forces that acted on God’s instructions.

There is also the puzzling notion of God traversing through Egypt, avoiding Jewish homes and only killing firstborns in Egyptian homes. Aside from the fact that this concept is difficult to understand, it is also hard to reconcile it with the plague striking at the exact point of midnight.

Did God really need to journey through Egypt? Rashi tries to explain it all by using an allegory, but as it turns out, his explanation just creates more confusion.

Rabbi Dunner shares a remarkable passage from the late Lubavitcher Rebbe’s Likutei Sichot, in which he reveals the hidden message behind the Torah’s presentation of the tenth plague, a message that has as much resonance today as it did 3,500 years ago.
